Have you ever wondered why Acknowledging the Country is essential? How does understanding Indigenous knowledge of the land go beyond our perceptions of culture and nature when we visit a place and connect with people? This workshop aims to deepen our comprehension of Indigenous knowledge of land, which is especially beneficial for students exploring, travelling, and visiting the Country. It emphasises that acknowledgement is not merely a formality but a meaningful act of sharing heritage and exchanging stories.

If weather permits, the workshop will also include a walking tour to Old Canberra House.

Speakers:

Anne Martin is a proud Yuin woman of the NSW South Coast. Born and raised at La Perouse in Sydney, Anne is the Director of the ANU Tjabal Indigenous Higher Education Centre and has been the Co-Chair of the NAIDOC Committee from 2007 to 2018.

Bill Gammage is a historian at the Humanities Research Centre, ANU, interested in traditional Aboriginal land management. His books on this subject are The Biggest Estate on Earth: How Aborigines Made Australia and with Bruce Pascoe Country: Future Fire, Future Farming.
